17 May ANITA
DIRECTOR/WRITER: Chad Hodge (TV’s Good Behavior, TV’s Wayward Pines, TV’s The Playboy Club)
PRODUCERS: Howard Rosenman (Call Me By Your Name), Darren Star (TV’s Sex and the City)
SYNOPSIS: This is the shocking, untold story of controversial religious activist Anita Bryant and her infamous 1977 campaign to repeal a gay rights law in Miami. The film is the result of an unprecedented investigation by writer-director Chad Hodge, including significant time Hodge spent with Anita Bryant herself. Bryant was a former Miss Oklahoma beauty pageant winner who became a singer and celebrity spokeswoman for the Florida Citrus Commission. In 1977, “The Orange Juice Lady” led a highly-publicized campaign to repeal legislation that prohibited discrimination based on sexual orientation. Her campaign, called Save Our Children, was successful and incited an organized opposition to gay rights that spread across the nation. But Bryant’s controversial views and incendiary rhetoric ultimately destroyed her career… and inadvertently ignited the gay rights movement.
